WUSA selection is a multi-step process consisting of an online application and a group interview.
Information regarding each step in the process is contained below. Applicants who fail to complete or pass one of the steps below will not be considered for the role.
Step one: Online application
Begin the process by completing the online application. In addition to some basic information applicants will be asked five questions, each of which is aligned with a Student Affairs Anchor that guides the WashU student experience.
Applicants will upload a brief (1-2 minute long) video or audio response that directly addresses these questions. Staff will only evaluate the content shared and its connection to the Student Affairs Anchors. Audio and video submissions are considered equally. If applicants choose to submit a video response, note that aspects of the video such as the background, location, camera quality, lighting, clothing, or similar characteristics will not be evaluated in any way. Please email Student Transitions & Engagement if you experience technical difficulties.
We encourage applicants to:
- Attend an information session before submitting their application. Important information will be shared during these sessions that will help you submit a strong application.
- Review our application questions so that they can reflect on how they plan to respond to each question within the suggested timeframe.
- Record responses to the questions before submitting their application. The application cannot be saved and must be completed in one sitting to avoid losing your information or the form timing out.
The online application will close on Friday, February 20 at Noon CT. Make sure to leave plenty of time to submit your application as they are time stamped and we are not able to accept late applications.
After you submit your application, you will receive an email confirming your application has been received. If you do not receive a confirmation email, your application was not received. If you experience technical difficulties, please contact Student Transitions & Engagement.
Please note, we are not able to extend invitations to group interviews to all candidates. It is important to put thought and effort into your written application. We will notify all applicants via WashU email if they are or are not moving on to Step Two: Group Interview.
Notification for step two: Group interview
WUSA applicants will be notified via email on a rolling basis until 5:00 PM on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, if they are moving on to group interviews. All applicants will be notified, so please check spam or junk mail if you have not received a notification by 5:00 PM on February 24, or email Student Transitions & Engagement.
Individuals who are not invited to group interviews may email our office to receive feedback.
Step two: Group interviews
WUSA applicants who move forward will be invited to sign-up to attend a group interview session. In this session, applicants will be organized into small groups. Each group will be presented with a series of scenarios that reflect common situations encountered by WUSAs, such as assisting new students with acclimatizing to campus life, addressing roommate conflicts, or providing support during stressful academic periods.
Candidates will engage in a structured discussion to develop thoughtful and practical solutions to these scenarios. Evaluators will assess each participant’s ability to communicate effectively, demonstrate empathy, show leadership, and work collaboratively within a team.
Group interviews will occur Friday, February 27; Saturday, Feburary 28; and Sunday, March 1. An opportunity to sign up for a group interview session will be contained in the group interview invitation email.
Please note, we are not able to extend invitations to group interviews to all candidates. It is important to put thought and effort into your written application.
Round Two: Individual Interview
WUSA applicants who move forward will be invited to sign-up for an individual interview with a student leader and a University staff member.
Sign-ups will be sent via email and applicants are required to sign up for a slot no later than Monday, February 17 at 8:00 AM to accept the offer for an individual interview.
Interviews will take place between Wednesday, February 19 and Wednesday, February 26, 2025.
Business casual dress
We ask applicants to arrive to their interviews in business casual dress. We recognize that dress codes are a form of societal oppression and acknowledge that students must learn to navigate these expectations to be successful in future workplaces.
We use this as an opportunity for applicants to practice business casual dress during interviews for the future. We do not take applicant dress in consideration in the process.
We understand that not everyone may own business casual attire. We recommend you try borrowing clothes from a friend or checking SWAP located in the Gregg House storefronts.
For examples of business casual attire, please see below:
- Business casual attire includes clothing such as a dress shirt, khakis, a skirt, dress, dress pants, and closed-toed shoes.
- Business casual does not typically include jeans, leggings, sneakers, shorts, and/or sandals.
Resources to prepare for an individual interview
We encourage applicants to refer to the Center for Career Engagement for opportunities to practice interviewing skills.
One resource the Center for Career Engagement provides is Big Interview, an online portal that assists with various interview skills and techniques. Additionally, the Center for Career Engagement offers opportunities to schedule mock interviews.
Request for accommodations
If you need any accommodations during the application and/or interview process, please email Student Transitions & Engagement. We will work with you to determine the best path forward.
Accommodations may include, but are not limited to:
- Reading and writing tasks
- Computer based tasks
